The Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) has released an updated version of the Research & Development Tax Incentive (R&DTI) application form, effective from 15 August 2025. While these changes will affect how companies register their R&D activities, it’s important to note that the underlying legislation remains unchanged.

At Hall Chadwick WA, we see these updates as more than just an administrative shift — they’re a timely reminder of the need for businesses to carefully consider how they present their R&D activities and supporting evidence at the application stage.

Key points to be aware of

1. A new application form is now mandatory
The previous application form was retired on 14 August 2025, and all companies registering R&D activities must now use the updated form. Draft applications prepared under the old version have been deleted, so new registrations will need to start fresh.

2. No changes to the legislation
While the format and detail of the application process has changed, the legislative criteria underpinning the R&D Tax Incentive have not. Your activities still need to satisfy the same statutory requirements as before.

3. Closer scrutiny at the application stage
The revised form introduces additional questions and more detailed reporting requirements. This signals a shift toward greater scrutiny and self-assessment at the application stage — moving some of the review process earlier, and placing more emphasis on companies providing clear, robust information up front.

What does this mean for your business?

For companies engaged in R&D, these changes mean that greater care will be needed when preparing applications. More detailed responses, expanded character limits, and new questions about eligibility and documentation may increase the compliance burden, but they also present an opportunity: to strengthen how you describe your projects, evidence your activities, and ultimately support your claim.
